Evaluation's The End.

Scarlett's Evaluation

Introduction

In my group I worked alongside Laura Henderson. Our project was to make a music video to the song ‘I can fly’ by the Kojo’s, lead singer James Keane. Myself did majority of the editing and we both filmed, whilst Laura worked extensively well on the ancillary tasks, we both helped and worked with each other to gain more ideas. We used software’s such as; Photoshop to design the album cover and logo, we both created a logo together in seperate ways then came together to see what we had thought of. I used Final cut express to upload all my footage and to use effects and cut/ edit.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

"Genres are created through repetition and recognition leading to anticipation and expectations" (Graeme Burton 2000)

Genre (definitions)

v A type of category of media texts.

v A formula

v A toolbox or blueprint for producers of media texts.

Genres are made up from a ‘repertoire of elements’. The repetition of these elements (conventions) creates and establishes a genre. Most of the time something us repeated enough it’s believed.

For our genre we used a narrative and performance, we also experimented with effects.

WHAT. genre was it?... 'INDIE POP'!!!

Codes & Conventions

We stuck to the codes and conventions. 'Editing, cinematography, lighting, sound, mise-en-scene, location shots'. "Familiar and the unexpected" (Graeme Burton 2000)

Do i think the innovations were proved successful?...... YES! so it is recognisable to an audience with its typical elements. We used; - Performance of the artist and character. - Narrative (love story).... parallel story line. -Experimented with the effects on final cut express. We listened to the song and came up with some inital ideas.

Branding

A brand is not the same as a product. A brand is the particular make of the product. For example, instant coffee is a product but Kenco, Nescafe and Tesco’s' own are all different brands of coffee.

A brand is often refers to more than just one product- it can refer to a whole line of products made by the one company e.g. the freshness of Bird's Eye products is often highlighted across its whole range of frozen goods, from peas to fish fingers.

What creates a brand?
According to mudvalley.com, there are eight elements that combine to create
Brand identity:
Brand Essence: what the brand means in a sentence
Brand Slogan: Often a catchphrase linked to a logo
Brand personality : What kind of character does the brand have? Humanises the brand, makes it easier to relate to.
Brand Value: What does it stand for/ against?
Brand Appearance: What does it look like/ sound like/ taste like?
Brand Heritage: What kind of tradition does it have?
Emotional Benefits: What feelings does it offer consumers?
Hard Benefits: Is it cheaper, better, does it wash whiter? What "real" qualifiable benefits does it offer the buyer?

Branding Our Logo
we used photoshop to create our logo. The logo is James Keane in white letters. Produced on a MAC computer with the software 'photoshop'. These are just a few pictures of me showing you in the making of creating the logo.

Font: Capture it 2, Size: 60, Regular, aa Sharp.

How effective is the combination of your main products and ancillary tasks?

Brand image is a main part in the ancillary tasks as the audience can recognise it. When producing our ancillary tasks we thought about the codes and convcentions used to create them. This also gets the audience to recognise our album cover, by using eye catching photographs, bar codes, the number one hit single 'I can fly' on the front cover that is also the album covers name. We have also wrote on the back cover the names of songs in the correct order. We have also used 'James Keane' as a logo that is also put on the front.

......Media institution that might distribute our media product.

Arctic Monkeys, When the sun goes down. This is what we had in mind for the Kojos then our ideas changed to...

James Morrison, Get to you. This is what made us think about having a solo artist and basing it in a park.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
 Finding The Right 'TARGET' Audience
To find our target audience we looked at Graeme Burtons Theory of the genre, industry and audience.

From the feedback that we received from the questionnaire, we noticed that the majority of people we asked to complete our questionnaire were aged 16-24. We had a mixture of both male and females, meaning that we got a fair result back. The occupation from the feedback was mostly students all with different parental occupations. The music genres that were most popular were Rock/Acoustic/Indie and Punk. We had a few random outliers of music genre such as Hip-hop and RnB. Most of the people also go to concerts/gigs every so often. The music channels that people watch were; VIVA, NME, Kerrang, Scuzz, MTV1, Flava, Chart Show, Smash Hits, The Box and 4music. Most people also like to watch live music. Many people watch music via the internet such as; Youtube, most people watch it on ITunes and MTV channels.

(Attracting our audience)........... To get our audience feedback we used a questionnaire.

This is our questionnaire. It also helps us find the right target audience; we are going to give these questionnaires out to those who are aged between 16 and up to 33+ if necessary. We have also asked what sort of music they like to listen to and if how they listen to music, and if they go to any live venues such as; concerts and gigs. We also produced a second questionnaire to see how the audience felt as the whole package together with the footage and ancillary tasks.

In order to advertise and market our product right we need to think about these factors. Attention awareness for the audience , interest desire action and satisfaction.

We also asked the question 'What makes a Music Video worth watching?'

This is the feedback that we received:

· 'Attractive stars! Humour theme running through narrative parts!'

· 'Having more than one thing to focus on to make it intriguing'

· 'Interesting narrative, bikini girls!'

· 'The music has to be good and the narrative goes with the song, bright colours'

· 'Decent narrative, entertaining, good editing, maybe a twist'

· 'Good music and narrative with a catchy song'

· 'Maintaining audiences interest with exciting shots and narrative, include something different'

· 'Experimental and different to others'

· 'Different to others and wanting to watch it again'

· 'Interesting narrative and good looking people, colourful'.

· From our field research we will take all of these ideas and thoughts into account and try to portray these ideas throughout our music video so that it will be appealing and will catch the viewer’s eye!

How did you use media technologies and the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?

This is just a quick slideshow showing you the contruction in the making of the music video.

With this I had to learn to operate the camera, and be able to upload footage on final cut express. For the filming we had to use; video camera, tape, batteries (couple) tripod and a connector lead so we could upload our footage. We then used an Apple Mac computer to store all our work; in class we also had a set Mac computer that had all our ancillary tasks anf film on. We used software's 'Final cut express', 'Photoshop', and 'InDesign'. This helped us create our music video as we could use the effects and make direct changes whilst editing. Last year in As level that was when I first filmed and I then learnt how to use the camera, this year I am filming again but also using Photoshop, I had to be trained to use the software as it gets you very agitated. However when I did start using it, I found it very helpful even though it gets quite frustrating. I would of liked to spend more time on Photoshop so it gets more familiar for in the future. We also used Photoshop to create our branding image, album cover and magazine advert.

Final Product of the Music Video

Summary
Overall I think that our project worked well, we managed with just two in the group and set deadlines for each other, we did have some problems because originally we had the band the Kojo's but unfortunately they broke up just weeks before filming so we asked the lead singer James Keane if we could film him, and thats what we did.

Music Video Final Product

This is our final music video which we have uploaded.
We also wanted our music video to start straight away instead of having a title at the start, the camera has been held in a certain angle to show that the girl he is thinking about is actually with him smiling, it also shows the emotions he is feeling and excitement whilst singing about her.

This is our magazine advert as part of our ancillary tasks:
